<br />
We get home and us digital shooters don't have to contain our excitement for too long. The moment of satisfaction or despair has arrived and we upload our work to the PC or laptop.<br />
<br />
Several things become apparent at this stage. Firstly we realise there are a couple of hundred images to plough through and we are going to be kept 'amused' for hours.<br />
<br />
Then we discover that the pic of the day that looked great on the camera's LCD is over-exposed,out of focus or simply doesn't work. The temptation we have now is to either spend ages tinkering with it or use it anyway and hope that others will see it as the great image you once hoped it was. Simple fact is that the first option will waste time and the second will put people off looking at our other work so neither option will be of any benefit to us. Delete the files and move on to the next shot.<br />
<br />
My workflow method is as follows :<br />
<br />
<b><u>1. Run a slideshow of everything captured</u></b><br />
<b><u><br /></u></b><br />
Sometimes I'll let it run straight through but often I'll hover over the pause button to delete any obvious failures as I go along and other times I'll wait until the end and go back and delete them.<br />
<br />
<b><u>2. Repeat 1. as often as necessary</u></b><br />
<b><u><br /></u></b><br />
I will tend to repeat this exercise a few times, gradually weeding out all those that can't be salvaged or which I have better versions of if I've taken a series of pictures of the same subject.<br />
<br />
<b><u>3. Pick out the best</u></b><br />
<br />
By now I've seen every image several times and know which ones are likely to be best when processed.<br />
<br />
<b><u>4. Process the RAW file</u></b><br />
<b><u><br /></u></b><br />
It's always best to work from the RAW file if you've got one - it contains the most information. Since I always shoot in colour and most (but not all) of my shots work best in black and white I'll make any exposure adjustments required and convert to monotone.<br />
<br />
<b><u>5. Fine Tuning</u></b><br />
<b><u><br /></u></b><br />
I have an old version of Photoshop and intend to get a copy of Lightroom in the future but for now I find the manufacturer's software adequate for my needs. In my case this is Olympus Viewer 2. Now, if I'm working in monotone, I'll try each of the B&W Filters to see how they look but usually these don't have much effect. Then it's just a case of tinkering. I'll probably start with a Gamma adjustment to bring out the mid-tones if they need it and then it's brightness, contrast and lightness and that's about me done. Of course, if it's a colour image, the saturation might require a tweak.<br />
<br />
<b><u>6. Zoom In and Check</u></b><br />
<b><u><br /></u></b><br />
As you go along you'll want to keep checking that you're not losing highlights to the dark side or blowing out areas you want to keep so I find it useful to zoom to full size and keep an eye on things. We may also want to try to adjust for any softness in the focus and my final stage, and only if the image is quite soft, is to use the Unsharp Mask to sharpen things up a bit.<br />
<br />
<b><u>7. Reviewing & Cropping</u></b><br />
<b><u><br /></u></b><br />
I don't subscribe to that rubbish about only ever using the image as it came out of the camera and neither should you - photographers have always trimmed and tweaked things in the darkroom; even and especially the greats. In our initial weeding out stage we should have removed any images where people or objects in the foreground or background have obviously spoilt the view of our main subject. Now we can look again to see how the shot might be improved. Check left, right, top and bottom and identify any obvious distractions such as people, cars or trees that will take the eye away from what you want to be the main focal point. At the same time, though, look for things that might create a natural frame such as pillars, window frames, flora etc. Now crop it if it needs it and leave it if it doesn't, being mindful not to take too much away or you'll only ever be able to print 6x4s. Personally, if I was going to remove more than half of the original image I'd probably just pass on that one altogether and would simply delete it at the first stage. Now, save the JPEG.<br />
<br />
<b><u>8. Save RAWs and Back Up</u></b><br />
<b><u><br /></u></b><br />
Once I've completed all the processing above and any cropping I leave my jpegs in the original folder and move all the remaining RAW files to a separate folder and back them up to an external hard drive.<br />
<br />
Now I'm ready to release my pictures to flickr or 500px or wherever for critique and hope others get as much pleasure out of looking at them as I got from taking them and creating the final image.<br />
<br />
I managed to get out a couple of times this week and here are a few of the shots that I might hand, or have handed, over to the critics. I'm reasonably satisfied with them but we all have different tastes and they might bomb under peer review. We'll see.<br />

I love to shoot portraits and record activity on the streets but there aren't always crowds and hustle and bustle where I live so, having arrived early last Friday, I decided that I needed to find something else to keep me amused.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Summer has finally arrived in the UK and I had clear blue skies and strong sunshine to light the day.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Living on the East coast, the sun was shining directly on the seafront buildings and they were extremely photogenic so I decided to expand my focus and start to record the manufactured environment in the town, with or without visible humans and also to look for interesting details round and about. These will be new projects to run alongside my candid portraits.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Here are a few of the keepers from the day which are best viewed in large format.....</div>

<br /><br />Yesterday was the first time that the Olympus 12mm f2.0 ZUIKO Digital ED Micro Four Thirds (24mm equivalent) lens had been used on the street. <br /><br />After shooting with the 45mm for the past few weeks it requires a complete change in style to use. Instead of the few yards between myself and the subject for a full length candid portrait I realised that you have to get really close with the 12mm. With the angle of view being so wide you can almost stand next to the subject to take the shot.<br /><br />Of course, the advantage here is that so much of the periphery is in view that it's not entirely necessary to point the camera direct at an individual and the depth of field, even with a fast aperture, ensures plenty of the scene is in focus. <br /><br />I found myself taking plenty of pictures 'from the hip', even as I or the subject moved past one another since the light was bright and this afforded a fast shutter speed - technically at least....please read on.<br /><br />This lens also opens up whole new opportunities for group and scene shots which are more restricted with a slightly longer lens. <br /><br />It will take a fair bit more experimentation to become truly proficient with this lens but I really enjoyed the change and the new challenge and it's going to get used a lot more. I think I will probably cover the same ground on a session, interchanging the lenses as I go.<br /><br />Now for a word of advice to myself and anyone else who becomes engrossed in composition and forgets about the camera settings.<br /><br />My personal preference when out on a session is to set my camera to Aperture Priority, select a value and leave the camera to work out the shutter speed. It was a bright, sunny day yesterday so I dialled in f2.8 and ISO200 and went about my work.<br /><br />Today's lesson is to always check your camera settings at regular intervals. <br /><br />I proceeded to merrily snap away for over an hour afterwards only to discover that I had inadvertently moved the wheel on the camera and changed the aperture to f22. Result = lots of unintentionally blurred images. <br /><br />We live and learn! <br /><br />Still, there were one or two reasonable shots from the earlier ones I took and I persevered for a while afterwards. Just a shame that a few good ones were rather spoilt.<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; line-height: 18px; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></span><br />

<br />
I joined 500px a week or so ago and I really like it. Whilst it doesn't possess the biggest community of photographers in the world, the site is clean and easy to use and displays your work very well. Another nice feature is the opportunity to buy and sell images, either as prints or digital downloads. Simply opt-in and the site takes care of things for you.<br />
<br />
The big daddy online, though is Flickr. With over 50 million registered users and 1 billion + images on it's servers it is huge. Getting noticed amongst all this 'noise' requires time and effort on the user's part. It is no use simply to upload a picture and expect people to notice it; you have to work at it!<br />
<br />
That means for each shot you should be adding as many relevant tags as you can think of, including a description and a title and posting in appropriate special interest groups where you will be reaching an audience that will be more appreciative of your work or be able to offer constructive criticism.<br />
<br />
Another important way to attract attention is through association with like-minded individuals. Search for other members who produce similar images and add them as contacts. You will be learning and gaining inspiration from them and with a bit of luck they will also add you as a contact and see your new posts when they open their 'Contacts' tab. By visiting their pages you can also see what inspires them by accessing their favourite images and adding these photographers as contacts if they also appeal to you.<br />
<br />
That's my brief overview of a couple of the most popular sites and I will return to this subject in the future when I have more user experiences to report on.<br />

I'm finding that when I go out it takes me a while to get shooting. Generally, I see very little in the first half an hour, start to take shots in the next half an hour and find more of a rhythm after that. I think it's to do with getting 'in the zone' as I remarked in a previous blog. After a time I find a pace of moving and observing that works and gets results - the best pictures always seem to come towards the end of a session.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I managed to get out today but I had less than an hour to spare before my dinner finished up in the dog.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This was a bit too much of a rush for me. I think a couple of hours produces both greater quantity and quality of output.<br />
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
Of the limited amount of work that I got through I think these were the most interesting...</div>
<div>

<br /></div>
<div>
Despite the existence of crowds brought out by the combination of dry weather and the holiday weekend I found it difficult to find material to shoot and a lot of what I did take was rather blown out by the bright conditions.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Of the limited shots I took these were about the best of a bad bunch and I've attached my own comments to them....</div>

<br /></div>
<div>
Still, I did manage to get out for a couple of hours at the weekend and get some practice in with the new gear. I live just outside the seaside resort of Great Yarmouth and when it's off-season like it is now we really need decent weather to bring the tourists in for the weekend. Needless to say, this past weekend was very, very quiet. This limited my subject matter and whilst I did manage to take a number of shots I found that when I got home and put them on the computer there were no 'keepers' amongst them. I can blame it partly on my unfamiliarity with the equipment, partly on my own ineptitude and a considerable amount on my lack of confidence and experience at Street Photography. As someone who is happy to melt into the background on any occasion I still felt very conspicuous in my endeavours, although towards the end of this first session I could feel a little bit of confidence starting to develop.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
To train myself for the next session I reprised the YouTube videos of street photographers I'd watched previously and these helped. Observing how others deal with the situations that arise with their subjects and how they communicate with strangers is priceless and I would recommend it to all the other novices out there.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
It seems to me that there are 3 main ways to photograph strangers in public spaces. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Firstly, you can ask their permission and a 'yes' gives you a happy and relaxed subject who will probably allow you to take a number of shots which should be well focused and composed. The main drawback is that they will be showing you what they want you to see, rather than the way that they really are. However, if taking profile pictures of interesting faces is your thing then why not.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Second, you can take the picture and then interact with them afterwards. I don't personally like this approach as it confirms what they suspected; that you took their picture and provides them with the opportunity to object. This approach might suit your personality but not mine.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Third is my preferred option - just take the shot and avoid eye contact. The subject is unlikely to be sure you took their picture, unless you're Bruce Gilden and just aimed a flash in their face, and you can move straight past and look for the next shot. To me, this is the easiest technique to learn and eventually master although I wouldn't discount using the other methods as my confidence grows.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Armed with all this new knowledge I ventured out again today and I was far more successful. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I found it far easier to point and shoot, albeit at a very 'safe' distance to begin with but as time passed by I became more and more comfortable with the equipment and what I was supposed to be doing. Some people I've read talk about being "in the zone" and I think I could feel what they are talking about. After a while walking around you find a rhythm of walking and seeing and shooting which becomes almost automatic. I started to get closer to my subject and became almost oblivious to the people around me. I wasn't in-your-face close but I stopped feeling conspicuous and relaxed.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Today, I bagged some keepers. They're probably not going to win any prizes but it's a start and something to build on and I'll probably upload a few for peer review and criticism (constructive I hope) on the photo sites and on here.</div>

Ordered the camera and lenses on Sunday and collected it all on Wednesday. Got great service and a fair deal from London Camera Exchange in Norwich (<a href="http://www.lcegroup.co.uk/Branch/?Branch=Norwich" target="_blank">LCE Group - Norwich Branch)</a>. Helpful and friendly people if you're in the area. But I digress.<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The first items that you come across when opening the E-P3s box are the instruction manual and the CD. I was delighted to find a 200 page manual in the box as I've solely been a Canon user my entire life and felt it would be useful reference material to carry around in my bag. Unfortunately, only about 7 pages of it are in English and there is no quick start guide. I swear they must have included Esperanto and Latin in here somewhere.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Digging deeper I found the battery and charger and decided that a fully charged battery would be the right place to start so I plug it in (very short lead) and an orange light comes on. What does this mean? With my Canon charger there were a series of red lights that stopped flashing when the battery was fully charged. Of course, I suspect that since it is straight out of the box this means that it is not fully charged but I'll check the manual anyway. Nothing in the manual, so I go online and find a full one. Orange means charging and blue will be confirmation that we're ready to go. Blue? I would have thought green unless things are different in Japan but that's just me being pedantic. Hold on, though. I've just checked and my charger is a BCS-5 and apparently the light will go off when charging is complete - I'd still prefer a green light so I could be sure that it actually worked.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
To be fair, the Basic Manual in the box will get you started. It covers battery, memory card and lens attachment, initial set-up of date and time and the key dial and button functions. This will be useful to some. Like most people I'm not one to read a manual from cover to cover so I hope that the Olympus menus are as intuitive as other reviewers have claimed. If I find that they are not, then I will return to the subject. However, I will skip read the comprehensive manual to see if anything catches my eye.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Battery and memory card inserted and it's time to attach a lens. First box to be opened contains the Olympus 17mm f2.8 M.ZUIKO Digital Micro Four Thirds Pancake lens. It's unbelievably small and light after SLR system lenses. Although it's plastic bodied with a metal mount it looks and feels well made. Aesthetically, it's very pleasing on the black body. No lens pouch included which is a bit mean of Olympus in my opinion - will have to improvise now.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Time to switch on and it only takes a couple of seconds for the camera to burst into life. I press the menu button and start poking at the screen expecting to be able to select functions but this is done by the dial on the rear of the camera. Date and time set without any fuss. Even with my sausage fingers the small buttons and dials are user-friendly.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
A couple of quick self-portraits in the mirror of the spare bedroom/office/study. The camera is left in Program mode and even on a gloomy April morning with the blinds shut the auto-focus has a quick hunt before releasing the shutter. 1/30s at f2.8 and ISO1600 and all looks good in the bright display, notwithstanding personal aesthetic challenges.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjz1eGLCSKiS1xZzQPA6uKrRrcRBXDsTePt2NMqFXBbmRRwDUP8L1-hceK5Dxthvv9fIeWvPK0KyxFw3xISU9QmRA10PKIP_QjfMSN8fLbQYZUP23r7B2_7oevb4aesB85fzYmu0dXcYgC-/s1600/David+Hodgson.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img alt="" border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjz1eGLCSKiS1xZzQPA6uKrRrcRBXDsTePt2NMqFXBbmRRwDUP8L1-hceK5Dxthvv9fIeWvPK0KyxFw3xISU9QmRA10PKIP_QjfMSN8fLbQYZUP23r7B2_7oevb4aesB85fzYmu0dXcYgC-/s200/David+Hodgson.jpg" title="David Hodgson" width="150" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Reviewing the first images I used the zoom function to go in for a closer inspection. This is pretty good though I'd personally have had a 1.5x zoom as my first stage of enlargement rather than the 2x that the camera offers. That's just a minor personal niggle, however. Where the zoom really comes into it's own is as a focusing aid. Simply zoom in to the area you want sharp and focus and shoot. This is all new to me and a fantastic option to have.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Time to load up the software. Registration was quick and painless on Windows 7. No need to go digging around in Explorer. The progress meter on Olympus Viewer 2 Setup rapidly reached about 40% before appearing to stall. After a couple of minutes installation was complete with the progress bar still stuck so just be patient. A similar pause occurred while installing Olympus 'ib' which probably took about 5 minutes to load. Installation of the pdf Instruction Manual was quick and painless and I simultaneously downloaded and installed the latest update for 'ib' which was a bit sluggish on a good internet connection and took about 15 minutes.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Next out of the box was the Olympus 45mm f1.8 ZUIKO Digital Micro Four Thirds lens. Of metal construction it looks and feels great. It doesn't look out of place on the black body and the camera still feels well balanced in the hand. Again, I took some low light shots around the house in late afternoon. Focusing was fast and with the wider maximum aperture ISO800 was possible. The images look great on the display, as expected because this lens gets great user reviews and I've got a feeling this lens might spend the longest time on the camera.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Last, but by no means least, it's the turn of the Olympus 12mm f2.0 ZUIKO Digital ED Micro Four Thirds lens. Again, its of an all metal construction and is very similar in size and appearance to the 45mm with the exception of the snap to focus ring which is a very cool addition. Took a few shots around the house with this using the magnifier to isolate an area and using the manual focus to fine tune things. Absolutely superb.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
If we finally get a break in the weather at the weekend (and it doesn't look promising) I'll be hitting the streets with my new best PEN friend and post a practical update and hopefully a few worthwhile pics.</div>The Reluctant Diaristhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00946773955031441776noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2186186915779872823.post-49571850444413011022012-04-22T13:32:00.001-07:002012-04-22T13:41:54.975-07:00MICRO FOUR THIRDS IT IS THENAfter much deliberation and hesitation I finally went and did it.<br />
<br />
I walked into a local camera shop, traded in my entire Canon system and ordered the Olympus E-P3 kit in Black with the 17mm lens and for good measure added the Olympus12mm f2.0 ZUIKO Digital ED and the Olympus 45mm f1.8 ZUIKO Digital ED.<br />
<br />
It felt strange letting it go after all these years but it's lack of portability meant it wasn't getting enough use and it was time to move on.<br />
<br />
I got to handle an E-P3 in store for the first time and I was really impressed with the touch screen focus and face recognition. It felt right straight away and I know that me and it are going to get along well.<br />
<br />
It will hopefully all be in my hands by next weekend and I'll be able to road test it properly and provide a further update on here.<br />

Saturday was a long and tiring working day and by Sunday the weather had turned very cold and the fair had left town so I didn't venture out. Instead, I pondered over the equipment I would need if I was going to take things seriously.<br />
<br />
Opinion becomes very polarized about what gear is necessary on the street. There are the 'purists' who think that the best shots can only be achieved by paying homage to the past masters and demand a rangefinder (preferably Leica) and the highest quality lenses. Others still believe that film is best. Some get hung up on megapixels and sensor sizes.<br />
<br />
The simple fact is that there isn't a one size fits all solution. Memorable and thought-provoking photographs can be taken with any camera that has ever been made.<br />
<br />
There is so much conflicting information and advice on the internet these days that choices seemingly become harder and harder to make.<br />
<br />
Here is some good advice :<br />
"The best camera is the one that is with you…" - Chase Jarvis.
<br />
"Let the camera choose you" - unknown source.<br />
<br />
My interpretation of the Chase Jarvis quote is that you can capture the moment with any camera; composition is the most important element of a (street) photograph. The second reference suggests that the camera that you are physically comfortable with, in terms of it's size, weight and feel and that you are emotionally happy about carrying around and shooting with is the one for you.<br />
<br />
In my last post I mentioned how uncomfortable I felt, literally and figuratively, handling my SLR on the street - it was bulky, conspicuous and awkward to use. I could obviously purchase a fast prime lens or two as these would be much lighter then the wide zoom but the camera still wouldn't feel 'right' for taking candid shots and would probably draw attention.<br />
<br />
My list of equipment requirements for street photography are : Small; Lightweight; Fast Focus; Image Stabilization; Availability of Lenses.<br />
<br />
I've been looking at all the options available and for me it's a no-brainer. The best equipment for me will be one of the Compact System Cameras. Having used Canon since 1981 when I traded my first few pay checks for an A1 I was hoping there would be something in their line-up to fit the bill. Unfortunately, the closest they have come is the G1X and that has slow auto-focus and a slow fixed zoom lens. Shame!<br />
<br />
So, I've decided that the time has come for me and my Canon SLR gear to part company. I can't afford to run two systems and this is the trade-off that has to be made. My current system will be sold in the next couple of weeks and the funds reinvested.<br />
<br />
The available options included the Leica which is obviously too expensive, the Sony which is expensive, lacks lenses and (if I may be so shallow) is not aesthetically pleasing, the Samsung which apparently buffers RAW slowly and the Micro Four Thirds offerings from Panasonic and Olympus.<br />
<br />
The choice has to be one of the 4/3 cameras. They tick all the right boxes and have a huge array of interchangeable lenses. The Panasonic GX1 gets the new 16mp sensor and is a great camera, I love the Olympus EP-3s styling and fast focus and now there's the OM-D E-M5 with the large sensor and fancy image stabilization about to be released on the world. Any of these and a couple of good prime lenses will do for me.<br />
<br />
Decisions, Decisions!<br />

<br />
Simply grab a camera, lens (or lenses) and storage medium (film or card) and hit the streets.<br />
<br />
Most people reading this will think they've got an eye for a picture and I certainly do. Why else would we want to take anything other than record shots of family members and places visited? We all think that we can do as well as the acknowledged leaders in the field. We've watched videos of them on YouTube and it looks easy.<br />
<br />
Now, unless you're one of life's uninhibited, ultra-gregarious, rhinoceros hide types the streets become very scary places. And I most certainly don't fall into the described category.<br />
<br />
On my first trip out I picked a day when the fun-fair and the market were in town. Guaranteed crowds, plenty of hustle and bustle and noise and bountiful subject matter; not to mention cover for me to disappear into.<br />
<br />
My equipment of choice was the DSLR (no choice really - it was that or the mobile 'phone) and the 17-40 lens. I thought it would be discreet. Maybe it was. I had the strap wrapped around my wrist and my hands folded behind my back but the weight of it let me know it was there and boy did I feel conspicuous.<br />
<br />
There wasn't as much cover in the sparse crowds as I'd expected and when I raised the camera to my eye I felt like I was being watched and probably judged.<br />
<br />
My perception was more than likely wrong. If I saw a kindred spirit out on the streets with their camera it would be noted, unconsciously remarked upon and almost instantly forgotten about.<br />
<br />
Needless to say, my first foray into the unknown produced only a half-full CF card and very few keepers.<br />
<br />
I love to watch videos of Joel Meyerowitz at work. He describes how he moves through crowds and makes himself invisible. From the perspective of the static viewer he appears anything but invisible as he darts around like a firefly. Maybe he is and maybe he isn't but it seems to me that the most important things he does are to avoid eye contact and be constantly on the move, always looking for the next shot and this is something I will most definitely be working on. Getting out there, concentrating on what I'm there for and being oblivious to what anyone else might think.<br />
<br />
I will go ahead and "Eat That Frog" and develop a way of working that makes me feel comfortable and gets me results.<br />
<br />

Whilst it provided an education by making me think long and hard before taking a shot, as I considered composition and exposure, I would also miss many opportunities as I hesitated and we all know that he who hesitates is lost. Digital liberated me and I could invest in a decent camera and eventually 3 good quality lenses. The freedom to take x shots per second, bracket exposures, shoot RAW, vary aperture and shutter speeds for the same shot and go home with 100s of pictures on the flash card enabled me to get more 'keepers' and accelerated my learning; rather like online poker has led to a proliferation of talented young players of that game.<br />
<br />
Until recently I had concentrated on Nature photography and the family archive duties (ever noticed there are no family pictures with you in them?). I think I will continue to add to my flora and fauna collection because it keeps my mind busy whilst in the countryside but what really excites me now is Street Photography.<br />
<br />
This is not an easy transition for anyone to make and this blog will be a written and pictorial record of my journey.<br />
